About

The Whiffenpoofs are America's Oldest Collegiate A Cappella Group.

Every year, 14 senior Yale students are selected to be in the Whiffenpoofs, the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group. Founded in 1909, the “Whiffs” began as a senior quartet that met weekly at Mory’s Temple Bar. Today, the group has become one of Yale’s most celebrated traditions. Singing a mixture of old Yale tunes, jazz standards, and other hits from across the decades, the Whiffenpoofs perform more than 200 concerts across six continents each year.

David Fung

Praised by The Washington Post for his “poetic and exquisitely sculpted interpretations,” pianist David Fung consistently delivers elegant and compelling performances in a wide range of repertoire.

A frequent guest of the world’s premiere orchestras, Mr. Fung has collaborated with the Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony, as well as the major orchestras in his native country of Australia. Known as an incisive interpreter of Mozart and Bach, Mr. Fung has collaborated with the chamber orchestras of Israel, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Orpheus, Saint Paul, and Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

He has captivated audiences at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Louvre, Gewandhaus, Palais des Beaux-Arts, and Zürich Tonhalle, as well as the major halls in Asia, including the Beijing Concert Hall, Guangzhou Opera House, Hong Kong Town Hall, Seoul Arts Center, and Taiwan National Concert Hall. Notable festival appearances include Aspen, Blossom, Caramoor, Edinburgh, Hong Kong Arts, and Ravinia.

Mr. Fung first garnered international attention as laureate of two prestigious competitions, the Queen Elisabeth, in Brussels, and Arthur Rubinstein, in Tel Aviv, where he was awarded the Chamber Music and Mozart Prizes.

He graduated from the Colburn Conservatory, where he studied with John Perry, going on to work with Peter Frankl, Claude Frank, and Arie Vardi at Yale University, and at the Hannover Hochschüle. Mr. Fung curates the Spirio Piano Series at the Chan Center in Vancouver and is a Steinway Artist.

Daniel Moody

Lauded for his “profoundly startling vocal resonance” (The New York Times) and “sweet and melancholy sound” (The Washington Post), Grammy-nominated countertenor, Daniel Moody is recognized for his interpretations of baroque masterpieces and contemporary premiers.

Moody is a frequent soloist of leading symphonic and baroque orchestras, including appearances with Apollo’s Fire, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, Philharmonia Baroque, and Les Violons du Roy. His appearance with Philharmonia Baroque alongside mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and conductor Nicholas McGegan was described as a “combination of tenderness and theatrical verve” (San Francisco Chronicle). Daniel has been featured in a number of Mark Morris’ productions, including Britten’s Curlew River and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and at the Tanglewood Music Festival where the Financial Times noted his “inspired and absorbing performances.” He has worked with such conductors as Daniella Candillari, Nicholas Carter, David Hill, Nicholas Kramer, Bernard Labadie, Ken Lam, Nicholas McGegan, Robert Moody, Thomas Søndergård, Jeannette Sorrell, Masaaki Suzuki, Kent Tritle, and Gary Wedow.

A graduate of the prestigious Yale Voxtet, resident at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Moody has performed as a soloist at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, London’s St. John’s Smith Square, and Cambridge’s Trinity College. His performances have been broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 in the United Kingdom, on Boston’s WGBH, Indiana’s WFIU, and WSHU’s Sunday Baroque.

Moody is also a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory and has won several awards in the Metropolitan National Council Auditions, George London Competition, Handel Aria Competition, New York Oratorio Society Competition, and Russell Wonderlic Competition.

About

Founded in 1988 by Harold Rosenbaum, The New York Virtuoso Singers (NYVS) has become a leading proponent of complex contemporary choral music in the United
States—regularly exceeding its “reputation for peerless preparation, assaying all of the pieces with fortitude and an almost intimidating level of technical skill (Christian Carey, Sequenza21).”

While the chorus performs music of all periods, Dr. Rosenbaum commissions, performs, records and premieres the music of today’s most enterprising and rewarded American composers. He is widely regarded as an important exponent of new music.

NYVS has proven, without exception, that there is no work too difficult or ambitious for its performers and director. From its early days, as an outgrowth of a chorus-in-residence created expressly for the Brooklyn Philharmonic, NYVS has grown into a cherished cultural institution with a résumé that many larger organizations would be hard pressed to match.
